Silver Springs, NY (WBEN) Five people within the Mennonite community in Wyoming County have been diagnosed with the measles.

Collins says symptoms resemble the cold: fever, cough and runny nose, followed by a red rash that starts at the head and moves on down.

Collins says the vaccines are safe and effective.

Amid the nation's worst measles outbreak in decades, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo in June signed a law ending all non-medical exemptions for vaccines required for children to attend school in the state.

The Centers for Disease Control has counted nearly 1,200 cases of measles in 30 states so far this year. About three-quarters of the cases are linked to outbreaks in New York.
