Lockport, NY (WBEN) As Lockport gets ready for facial recognition technology, the state education department is asking the school district to put the brakes on it.

NYSED is currently reviewing the Lockport district’s privacy assessment to ensure that student data will be protected with the addition of the new technology. The Department says it has not come to the conclusion that the District has demonstrated the necessary framework is in place to protect the privacy of data subjects and properly secure the data.  So the department recommends a delay in using the system.

NYSED adds regulations are in the process of being finalized that will adopt a standard for data privacy and security for all state educational agencies.

NYSED says it is in contact with the District.  "We have made it clear, the Department has not approved the testing of the system planned for next week and we told the District not to commence the testing of the technology until we receive information that assures us that student information will be properly protected," says NYSED.
