BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Wegmans shoppers on Monday began their shopping experience for the first time without the ability to use plastic bags at checkout.
For some shoppers, they were prepared for the change and brought their reusable bags with them.
A student named Corey from the University at Buffalo left Wegmans on Monday morning with his groceries in paper bags. It caught him off guard because he was there on Sunday night when the plastic bags were still used.
He also wasn't aware that he spent five cents on a paper bag, with the money benefiting the Food Bank of WNY.
"That's cool," he said.

Another woman who didn't want to be named completely forgot that Monday was the first day of no plastic bags at Wegmans.
"I'm gonna have to pick up some more of the reusable bags," she said. "Thank goodness today isn't my big shopping day. Sometimes on those days I have 10 to 15 bags."
Most admitted they forget to bring their reusable bags on a regular basis.
"What does it take, 7 to 14 days for a habit to become a habit?" Carol said.
The statewide ban on single-use plastic bags begins March 1.
