BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Governor Andrew Cuomo this week signed legislation which would allow the City of Buffalo to establish speed cameras in school zones.
The programs allows the city to enforce speed limits in school zones using cameras that record speeding violations in real time without the need for a police officer at the scene. School districts would then give the video to the city, who can then fine the person who sped through the school zone.
The governor's office said that since a similar program was developed in New York City in 2013, there was a 21 percent drop in people who were killed or severely injured in crashes within a school zone.
According to the law, a fine for speeding in the school zone is $50.
