ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Strong National Museum of Play inducted Magic: The Gathering, Matchbox Cars, and the Coloring Book into its National Toy Hall of Fame.
The three new inductees were among twelve finalists into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Some of the twelve finalists included Care Bear, Jenga, Nerf Blasters, Fisher Price Corn Popper, My Little Pony, and more.
Magic: The Gathering, created in 1993, took the toy world by storm with its fantasy themes and epic one-on-one battles that involve both chance and strategy.
"(Magic: The Gathering) not only sparks imagination and creativity, but researchers have also dubbed it the most complex game in history," Strong Museum Curator Shannon Symonds said.
The classic Coloring Book has been around since the late 19th century, providing enjoyable activities for children, as well as therapeutic outlets for adults.
"The books told stories from history, shared all kinds of knowledge, and offered children glimpses of faraway and even fantasy lands." Museum Curator Nicolas Ricketts said
The National Toy Hall of Fame was established in 1998 in Oregon. It came to the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester in 2002.
