Who will be operating Hyde Park Pavilion later this fall?
If members of the Niagara Falls City Council have their way, current operators Mike and Gene Caretta, will remain in place as they have for the past 14 years.
But, Mayor Robert Restaino said he hopes Albany-based Legacy Hospitality and Entertainment Group becomes the operators of the dual-rink complex.
A political tug-of-war has been brewing since this summer and the issue remains unresolved, despite a Council 3-2 vote on Sept. 17 to back the Carellas.
Restaino, meanwhile backs Legacy - who responded to a city-issued RFP - about taking over Hyde Park Pavilion's operations.
"I know we can get better results with the rinks," Restaino said.
Between leagues and tournaments, more than 10,000 hockey players skate at Hyde Park on an annual basis. The rinks have a projected $12 million yearly economic impact for Niagara Falls' businesses including hotels, restaurants, attractions and retail outlets.
"It has a big impact and that's due to the Carellas and what they've done," said Councilman Donta Myles.
Restaino said the Carellas do not have a current contract to operate and manage the rink but Myles disputes that, saying they are grandfathered.
The mayor said he'd like to see Legacy take over the rink's operations this fall but his efforts are being blocked by members of the council.
The stalemate continues, but Restaino thinks a solution can be worked out between all parties.
