Sabres sign Jordan Greenway to two-year contract extension

The extension is worth $4 million a year

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550/WBEN) - Ahead of Friday's NHL Trade Deadline at 3 p.m., the Buffalo Sabres have locked up one of their depth wingers before he was set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer.

As first reported by PuckPedia and TSN NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, the Sabres have signed forward Jordan Greenway to a two-year contract extension worth $4 million a season.

The 28-year-old was first acquired by the Sabres just before the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline from the Minnesota Wild. In his 110 games in Buffalo, Greenway has scored 17 goals and added 23 assists for 40 points.

In his first full season with the Sabres this past year, Greenway scored 10 goals and put up 28 points in 67 games played.

Injuries have been a concern with Greenway over the duration of his NHL career, especially in his time with the Sabres. A "mid-body injury" earlier this season has limited Greenway to just 26 games, where he has three goals and eight points.

Following the morning skate this past Saturday, Greenway talked about wanting to stay in Buffalo.

"My experience here has been unreal. I love this group, I love the direction that Kevyn [Adams], Lindy [Ruff], everyone, the direction they're trying to go and I'm all in," said Greenway.

"Being an older guy, trying to help the young guys do what it takes, let them know, show them what it takes to make the playoffs, it's inspiring. I really enjoy it, and the city, it's truly been a great experience."

Greenway says he didn't have any expectations when he arrived from the Wild. It was just "Let's play hockey."

The native of Canton, N.Y. is now under contract through the 2026-27 season, where he will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027.

Greenway was a former second-round pick (50th overall) of the Wild in the 2015 NHL Draft.

During his monthly appearance during "Schopp and the Bulldog" this past Friday, Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams talked about his plans with Greenway and pending unrestricted free agent Jason Zucker.

"We've wanted to make sure to retain guys that we felt were going to help us win moving forward, and both Jason and Jordan have become very important players within the locker room," Adams said on WGR. "The way they carry themselves and are important players on the ice. These are guys that we've indicated that we'd like to have them here, and we'll keep working at it over the next week. And if we can't get a deal done (as of Wednesday, only Zucker), we certainly don't have to trade him on Friday either, because we have him until July 1, so we can keep working at it.

"But if I feel if we're in a position where we aren't able to get him signed and there isn't a future, then we'll have to look at that. But certainly our priority is to have him stay with us here."
