AMHERST (WBEN) - After a period of uncertainty, Town of Amherst Supervisor Brian Kulpa announced Wednesday that the Audubon Golf Course will remain an 18-hole course and the town is committing to a significant investment to allow for much needed upgrades.
"In working with the golfing community, our partner Indigo Golf, the town's recreation department and Golf Task Force, the town has committed $1 million in capital funds for improvement throughout the course," said Kulpa. "After much discussion and the renewed popularity of the course, it was decided that Audubon Golf Course would remain 18 holes."
The town will invest $500,000 in the 2022 Capital Improvement Program plus another $500,000 in 2023.
About a year ago, Amherst replaced the golf operator for the facility, and through a lengthy RFP process, settled on Indigo Golf Partners.
"Not even all the way through their first season as an operator, Indigo has completely turned the tables for this course," said Kulpa.
Through August, rounds of golf exceeded budget by 30%, resulting in a net income of $140,000.
"Right now, the course is performing well," Kulpa continued. "This isn't a maney-making operation for the Town of Amherst, but we need to know that stuff is going to be sustainable when we build it."
Kulpa repeatedly emphasized the need to make improvements to the course's drainage system, and that will be a major focus on bettering conditions at the course in the coming years.
