A house selling for north of $1 million in Clarence is hardly big news.
But, not this house at 5119 Shimerville Road.
Why?
Because the 95-year-old, five-bedroom house is steeped in local history.
While it has been a private residence since the early 1950s - and owned by several community business leaders - it was developed in 1930 as the women-only clubhouse and nine-hole golf course for the former Meadowbrook Country Club. Meadowbrook, which operated from 1927 to 1943, is the predecessor to Brookfield Country Club.
Clarence Town Historian Joseph McGreevy said when the property was developed women were not allowed to either golf or use the main Meadowbrook Golf Course. They had to use their own course on the east side of Shimerville Road while men golfed on an 18-hole course on the west side of Shimerville Road.
"It was the mood of the time," McGreevy said.
It wasn't until after World War II that women could play the 18-hole course and use the clubhouse.
By that time, the clubhouse was converted into a private residence.
"You could say a little bit of American history ties into that house," McGreevy said.
Listing agent Beth Klipfel from Hunt Real Estate said the house is attracting the attention of would-be buyers because of its history, location and amenities.
"People love older homes," Klipfel said.
The house has a $1.3 million asking price and includes such amenities as a tennis court and swimming pool, both of which were added after it became a private residence.
As for Brooklfield, men and women have jointly shared its 18-hole golf course, clubhouse and other amenities for several decades.
