If Super Bowl Sunday is the big cheese - in terms of business - for pizzerias then Thanksgiving Eve is like the AFC or NFC championship Sunday with a strong demand for pizza and wings.
"Super Bowl is on another level but Thanksgiving Eve is really busy," said Joey Todaro, whose family owns and operates LaNova Pizza.
Just how busy?
Todaro says Thanksgiving Eve represents a 50% increase in sales of pizza and wings as compared to most other days, save for Super Bowl Sunday.
For LaNova, prep work begins the day before and then on Thanksgiving Eve, crews arrive around 6 a.m. for a day that lasts deep into the night.
"It is always a busy, busy day for us," Todaro said.
Pizzeria website Slice.com lists Thanksgiving Eve as one of the five busiest days of the year for pizza and sub shops - or, in Buffalo's case, pizza and wings.
In addition to Super Bowl Sunday and Thanksgiving Eve, the other "busy" days for pizzerias include Halloween, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Jim Pacciotti, Bocce Club Pizza president, agrees with Todaro that Thanksgiving Eve is an extremely busy one for his three locations.
Sales spike upward by more than 40%, Pacciotti said.
This year alone, just on Nov. 24 - three days before Thanksgiving - Bocce had 80 out of town orders for pizza and wings.
"I call it a controlled chaos," Pacciotti said. "But, this is the time of the year for us to do a lot of business."
