Lackawanna, N.Y. (WBEN) - "Right now, my heart is full," said Monsignor David LiPuma, Pastor of Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica in Lackawanna. "I'm trying to imagine what it was like for Father Baker 100 years ago."
It was May 25, 1926 when Father Nelson Baker consecrated the Basilica on Ridge Road.
"The joy that must have filled his heart seeing this magnificent shrine that he conceived and brought to fruition. And now 100 years later, to see it restored and immaculate and beautiful, is very exciting. I can't express it," said LiPuma.
A Centennial Grand Gala will be held Saturday for over 400 people at the Statler. On Sunday, a Centennial mass will be held at 2 p.m., with Bishop Michael Fisher as the celebrant along with a number of priests. The public is invited.
A massive restoration project started in 2021. Crews are currently working to replace the copper dome. The marble floors and pews have been restored. There is new plaster, painting and new lighting. Stained glass windows and murals have been cleaned and restored.

Father David said it is all being done to celebrate the legacy of Fr. Baker.
"Father Baker's influence still continues to this day. We are hoping and praying for two miracles that we need for beatification, canonization and sainthood. We keep praying for that," added LiPuma.
OLV Basilica averages over 250,000 visits each year.
