Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) – Cheektowaga police say a two-year-old child was struck by gunfire Sunday morning, shortly before 10:30 on Lackawanna Avenue in the village of Sloan.
The is being treated at Oishei Children’s Hospital. There is no word yet on the severity of the child’s injuries.
Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. A person of interest was detained, but police say they continue to look for others who may have been involved, including possible additional victims.
"There's a certain expectation that children should be protected," said Jeff Rinaldo, a former Buffalo Police Captain and current Vice-President of the Terrian Group. "When we would have a gross case where a child was shot or killed, especially from a random event, most times the public came together and cooperated to the best of their ability."
A Cheektowaga police captain said there does not appear to be any threat to the public at this time.
