Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) A person is in custody after a woman was found dead Sunday just before 3:45 p.m., according to Cheektowaga police.
The incident began on Hedwig Avenue near the corner of Walden Avenue and ended on Walden Avenue near Alexander Avenue.
Callers told emergency dispatchers that the woman had been struck by a vehicle and that several shots were fired from a handgun by a man driving the vehicle, police said.
Officers identified a person of interest a short time later in a different vehicle. The suspect led police on a chase into the city of Buffalo, where, with assistance from the Buffalo Police Department, officers detained the individual. Cheektowaga Police Captain Jeffrey Schmidt says he does not believe there is a danger to the community at large.
Police said they are still investigating the cause of the woman’s death and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Her identity has not yet been released.
