Two Ontario residents were slightly injured in a weather-related March 17 accident on the New York State Thruway near Newstead.

The accident was one of several investigated by the State Police - all related to the late winter storm that hit the Buffalo Niagara region on March 16 and March 17.

In the Newstead accident, a 2010 Freightliner utility truck driven by Jonathan Francis, 66, overturned near Mile Marker 405 as he was eastbound. The accident occured around 8 a.m.

State Police investigators said Francis lost control of his truck and it overturned into a center median.

Francis and a 20-year-old male passenger were transported to Erie County Medical Center with minor injuries.

State Police said traffic was not impacted and the truck has since been removed.

Earlier, around 6:30 a.m., State Police responded to a two vehicle weather-related accident near the westbound Walden Avenue (Exit 52) exit on the Thruway near the Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga.

State Police said a 2021 Ford Pickup truck with a travel trailer driven by Mark Joseph Lawniczak, 40, of Lancaster lost control causing the trailer to overturn.

Both the truck and trailer went off the right shoulder and then struck a 2023 GMC U-Haul van that was waiting to be towed because of an earlier and separate incident.

While traffic was able to sneak by the accident scene, the typical early morning rush hour traffic was forced to slowdown until all the vehicles were towed and the scene was cleared, State Police said.

No injuries were reported.

The accidents were one of several the State Police dealt with much of Tuesday morning.
