Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - Renovations continue along the runway at Buffalo Niagara International Airport. The NFTA says all signs are pointing to an on-time finish early next month.

NFTA Spokesperson Kelly Khatib says things are going smoothly. "We're very, very excited and very happy with the progress. It is still ready to be wrapped up the beginning of September, first or second week," says Khatib.

As for those dealing with planes not normally flying over their homes, Khatib says that will end with maintenance completion "Everything will go back to your regularly scheduled program, so to speak," says Khatib. "Once that's wrapped up, you'll be able to see the planes just going back into their regular rotation, because they'll go back to using that main runway."

Those folks will get a break for more than a year, says Khatib. "That's not going to be happening again until the spring or summer of 2025, so that'll be the next route with this," says Khatib. She says crews will be removing and replacing concrete under the asphalt on the other end of the runway.

Khatib says the goal is about safety. "You can always expect a smoother landing, and it'll just pretty much go back to normal, which is what everyone is looking forward to and hoping for," says Khatib. She says the NFTA wants everyone to feel safe and are getting that experience when they come to the airport.

The total price tag for this project is said to be $36 million.
