Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A man charged with murdering his girlfriend and newborn son at their Norwood Avenue home in Buffalo was found dead Wednesday night at Erie County Correctional Facility.
The Erie County Sheriff's Office says 30-year-old Kidane Haile was found unresponsive in the showers of a dormitory at the prison shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday. Haile was pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m. after medical personnel tried saving his life.
Haile's death is being investigated as a suicide.
"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and friends who have been impacted by this tragedy as they receive this difficult news. To protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, no further information will be released by the District Attorney’s Office," Erie County District Attorney Michael Keane said Thursday morning.
Haile was awaiting trial for the death of 29-year-old Katie Carrig and their 4-day-old son Noah. Haile was facing charges of first and second degree murder. He had also been charged with arson.
Haile was facing life in prison. He was set to be back in court in January.
