Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - After recovering from a life threatening case of pneumonia, Pope Francis died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday.

Buffalo residents, who were out shopping at The Broadway Market on what was supposed to be a joyous day, shared their thoughts on the heartbreaking news.

"I'm devastated. Wonderful man, wonderful of his faith. I'm a little concerned about what the future may be. I cried this morning when I read it. It was the first thing that popped up on my phone when I woke up this morning," stated one resident.

"I didn't realize until my son came to pick me up that he had passed. I'm so sorry about that. I just hope everyone is able to handle it the best way they can," said another.

"I was just really devastated because he was doing so well. He was just a loving pope. I mean, he cared about everybody."

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis died of a stroke and heart failure less than a day after making an appearance at St. Peter’s Basilica for Easter Sunday Mass.
