Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - In an effort to enhance safety in Buffalo Schools, the district is fast-tracking a student and staff testing program that will test across all school buildings at a rate as high as 30-percent.
The data will be available beginning Friday on an online dashboard that will display a school's status in a green(good), yellow(cautionary) and red(critical) color scheme. The data is expected to be available on a weekly basis for each school.
“We can’t not test our students and our staff, we’ve just started to go back to school," said Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash in addressing the school board Wednesday evening. “Our staff and our families deserve to know what is the status of COVID in our schools.”
Not only with the district begin testing, they'll be managing the testing effort themselves at a rate beyond what is required over the next two months. "We’re going to be our own licensed testing entity, now we have the capacity to do it ourselves."
Dr. Cash told the board he is consulting closely with Dr. Dennis Kuo on their return to school effort and reinforced the district's decision for a limited return to class as the COVID positivity rate in Erie County continues to decline.
Currently Buffalo Schools are allowing in-class learning for grades pre-k through two and for all high school seniors.
