Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The Buffalo Zoo welcomed a new arrival over the weekend. Tashi gave birth to a fifth calf, a baby girl early Saturday morning.

This is Tashi's fifth calf but the first with the zoo's previous male George, who
formerly lived here at the Zoo and now resides at another AZA accredited facility. "On Saturday, around 3:29am, we welcomed a new baby rhino. Mom and baby calf are doing great," says Christian Dobosiewicz of the zoo.

The zoo says Tashi's pregnancy was based on a recommendation from the greater one-horned rhino Species Survival Plan (SSP) through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo says SSP's are designed to
maintain genetically diverse and stable captive populations of species. The Buffalo Zoo is a longtime participant in this program, resulting in five rhino calves (4 females and 1 male) over the past 17 years.

The calf doesn't have a name yet. The zoo says it will let the mother and calf bond for a period of time before meeting the public.
