Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - It's been less than a month since Braymiller Market in Downtown Buffalo closed, and it already has a new use.

Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon says the building will house Buffalo's B District Police for, at least, a year while the main station undergoes interior renovations and a sewer main replacement.

"We had to find a location for them. Thankfully, we entered into a lease for $1 with Mr. Green and the Braymiller Market site on Ellicott. Having that public safety use is going to help to that neighborhood," said Scanlon on Thursday. "The fact that it's not really costing us anything, and it'll happen be a place for our officers to be housed while those renovations take place."

Scanlon says he hopes the former Braymiller Market will, once again, be a grocery store, but in the meantime, he's happy that it can still act as a tool to help serve the community.

"We all know the main players in that industry. We'll have conversations with them. If that's not working, we'll move on to some others, and we'll just continue to have those conversations. I think we all know how important it is to have a grocery store in Downtown Buffalo," Scanlon said. "One of the my commitments and one of my focus is to make sure that we do have one so we'll continue to have those conversations."
