Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - Cheektowaga Police and the family of a man killed in a shooting at the 33 Speakeasy on Genesee Street are pleading for the public to help by coming forward with information on the deadly shooting that occurred February 22.
"We've identified numerous people who were inside the bar," said Cheektowaga Police Chief Brian Gould as he asked for anyone with information on what happened that night to come forward. "We're not getting the cooperation that we would like on this case."
Police were called to the bar after reports of a fight with gunshots fired, said Gould. When officers arrived on the scene, 24-year-old DeAngelo Williams was on the ground in the parking lot after suffering gunshot wounds. He was transported to ECMC where he was pronounced deceased.
Gould says it is believed Williams was attempting to break up the fight when the gunshots were fired.
"There are people in the community who know what happened," pleaded Gould during a news conference Thursday afternoon. "There are people who witnessed it. There are people talking about it and may have heard who did it."
The sister of Williams spoke at the briefing and said the family is hurting and would appreciate anyone coming forward with information.
Gould says he is aware there is a stigma in the community about coming forward with information and he points to a 100% anonymous method of reporting information via the department's website.
"The system is 100% anonymous," Gould said. "We are not able to find out who sent these tips in," he added, saying it is managed by a 3rd party provider.
"We need the community to come forward and help us out."
