Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Border crossings to Canada from the United States have reopened after being closed nationwide due to a Canadian Customs system issue, but are moving extremely slowly.

The Canada Border Services Agency told WBEN they're still experiencing a system outage, causing delays in commercial processing at ports of entry in the Southern Ontario Region. The system outage put a halt to commercial traffic on the Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, and Rainbow Bridge early Tuesday morning.

"We are working closely with IT partners to resolve this issue as soon as possible," the Agency said in a statement. "Primary inspection lanes (PIL) at Peace Bridge and Queenston-Lewiston bridge have been staffed with officers to process traffic and shipments. We are actively working with our partners at the Peace Bridge Authority and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission to assist with traffic control."

Regular commuter traffic at the crossings was not impacted by the issue, but it caused major delays on the I-190 in the City of Buffalo throughout the morning.

A spokesperson for the City of Buffalo told WBEN the city is taking precautions, and is expecting significant traffic backups on city streets near the Peace Bridge. The city is continuing to monitor the situation.
