Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - As the Bills prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday in Orchard Park for the 10th time in six seasons, members of "Bills Mafia" at a certain age may recall the Buffalo's four-straight Super Bowl appearances. If the Chiefs were to win the AFC title once again this year, it would mark their fourth-straight appearance in the "Big Game".
Don Purdy was Director of Football Administration when the Bills reached the Super Bowl from 1990-93. He says there is still a deep sense of pride in what the team accomplished in the '90s.
"I think where it's problematic is that they've actually won in this run," said Purdy in an interview with WBEN. "Having won one, that does give them an edge. So there is something to be said for why we should all root against that, starting with this Sunday."
Purdy says going into Sunday's game, tie breakers are critical.
"Having a head-to-head loss would would be really tough to take. Then again, a win, which I think the Bills having proven that in the regular season, they have almost dominated the Chiefs. Really, we all hope it flips in the playoffs," Purdy said.
Meanwhile, Del Reid of 26 Shirts says if the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl again this year, it won't take away from the Bills' accomplishment some 35 years ago.
"I do not want to see it, because we never got a Super Bowl win out of that era. But we have been able to claim that we're the only team that has reached the Super Bowl four times [in-a-row]," said Reid with WBEN. "No other team has done it. And I always said it could never happen again. It's impossible. So I want that to remain true."
Reid says the focus needs to be on Sunday's game.
"It's vital for the Bills to get a win because they're now chasing New England for that division championship," Reid noted. "We've seen, I hate to say it, so many of the past several seasons where a regular season win does not mean you're going to beat the team in the playoffs. There's no way you can guarantee say, 'Oh, I'm happy if they lose the regular season game, because that means they're going to win the playoff game.' Of course, that's not how it works. It's important that they get a win this Sunday, not because it's the Chiefs, but because the next game on the schedule."
Kickoff this Sunday is set for 4:25 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.
