Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) Eight Days of Hope, the faith-based disaster relief organization currently helping central Texas in the aftermath of catastrophic flooding, is also deploying volunteers this week in Buffalo's Niagara District.
"We have grown so much as an organization, that we can be in three places at once. It's happened about three times in the last eighteen months," said Steve Tybor, President and CEO of Eight Days of Hope (EDOH).
The goal of the 6th annual Buffalo outreach is to serve 100 families with free home repairs.
"We're painting about 20 homes some beautifully unique colors. Eight to ten families are getting brand new roofs. Each would cost 30 to 40 thousand dollars. But we have contractors who want to give back to the city of Buffalo
and they love Eight Days of Hope. We're also replacing windows and fixing a lot of porches. We're also cutting lawns and cleaning gutters."
Over two thousand volunteers from 39 states are in Buffalo this week for the
outreach. Tybor said many materials are donated and many skilled tradesmen donate their time.
"About 800 of the volunteers are skilled contractors who are looking to give back. We're going to do about $1.2 million dollars of work but we're still a little short. So if you're listening today, you can donate online at EightDaysofHope.com. Every penny will be spent here and will not go elsewhere," added Tybor.
The Niagara District outreach continues through Saturday, July 26. If you'd like to volunteer, Tybor said they won't turn anyone away.
"Show up by 7 am at Elim Christian Fellowship Church, 70 Chalmers Avenue
in Buffalo. We'll put you to work and give you a couple of T-shirts and you'll meet people from around the country."
