Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - It was announced on Thursday by Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown that the evidence collection portion of the investigation into the horrific mass shooting at the Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Avenue has concluded.
"We are fortunate that there has been such an incredible outpouring of support for the family of the victims, and for the members of this community," said Mayor Brown in his opening remarks.
President and COO of Tops, John Persons, was also on-hand for Thursday's press conference. He says the company will continue to work to support the East Side community, with the focus on re-opening the store as soon as possible.
"Our commitment right now is to our associates, which is what we've put a lot of our focus to, and to the immediate community from Jefferson Avenue." Persons said. "I'm committing to you that we're going to make every effort to get this store turned around and opened up quickly, and in a very respectful way."
Tops will remodel their store, in addition to adding a tasteful memorialization of the 10 victims who tragically lost their lives this past Saturday.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia also added later in the press conference that the investigation footprint is shrinking, with the crime scene now condensed to just the Tops property.
"We need to make sure the parking lot is open and secure for them to work there," said Gramaglia.
While most of the law enforcement agencies will clear the premises to allow for the re-opening phase for the store commence, Gramaglia ensures the community that Buffalo Police will not be leaving the neighborhood, with officers on each side of the store.
"For the officers, it's part of the grieving process, as well," he said.
