Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) With the extended deep freeze this year, a lot of people decided to make a break for it during winter break week for most school districts. And they're headed south.

"Orlando is always the number one destination, no matter what week of the year. But this year, Caribbean cruises out of Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and Port Canaveral came in number one this year for top destination, bumping Orlando to number two," said Elizabeth Carey, with the AAA of Western and Central New York.

What is it about cruising that has become so popular?

"It's great for families because you know the price up front. You're getting all of your entertainment, activities and food at one price and there are great deals right now. On top of that you can unpack once and visit multiple destinations," added Carey. "In addition it's great for extended families with children, Aunts, Uncles and Grandparents."

Top 5 destinations are all warm weather places

1. Caribbean cruises
2. Orlando
3. Cancun
4. Aruba
5. Punta Cana

The Caribbean is the most popular cruise destination. 72% of cruise passengers from the U.S. are headed there.

Orlando is always a draw with the adventure and excitement of theme parks that are often offer new attractions.

For families not going away, there are some ideas that are closer to home.

There are great skiing opportunities around here and across the state. With the Olympics underway, some people are traveling to Lake Placid, home of the 1980 winter Olympics. It offers indoor and outdoor ice skating, speed skating sessions, and there are bobsled and skeleton experiences at Mt Van Hoevenberg.

And don't forget visiting Niagara Falls, in our own backyard. It offers a magical, uncrowded, serene experience with frozen mist, icicles, and illuminated, icy landscapes.
