Hamburg, N.Y. (WBEN) - The detection of the odor of gas Wednesday morning at Frontier Middle School caused an evacuation and closure of the school.
National Fuel determined the potential leak was coming from the ceiling corridor of the hall adjacent to the Middle School gymnasium. That gas line has now been capped and permanently shut off at its source.
Out of an abundance of caution, students and staff were evacuated to Frontier High School. The district later determined that morning that students would not return to the Middle School for the remainder of the day. In addition, all after school activities and modified sports were also canceled.
Parents of Middle Schoolers were allowed to pick up their children from the High School auditorium. Those Middle School students who were unable to be picked up from the High School were served lunch and sent home on their regular bus runs.
Classes at the Middle School will resume on Thursday.
