Grand Island residents still waiting for radiation testing results

South Grand Island Bridges
A new set of Grand Island bridges? It's possible
Jim Fink - WBEN

Grand Island, NY (WBEN) - As radiation testing expands into the southtowns, some Grand Island residents are still waiting for answers to what, if anything, was found in their community.

Earlier this week, the State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency announced they would be expanding radiological testing into several southtowns communities at a limited scope, similar to what has been happening in Grand Island over the past two weeks.

"The first I talked to them bout it they said there was about 15-20 properties that interested them," Grand Island Supervisor Peter Marston told WBEN Wednesday morning. "They were reaching out to landowners for permission. They need permission before they can test. Then they reached out to me as Supervisor and said there's some Town land they'd like to check too. We gave them all the permission they need and so far we have not heard anything back yet."

And there's still no indication when those results will come.

"I understand that it takes a little bit for everything to come back from the lab," Marston said. "They can kind of give you a thumbs up or thumbs down pretty quick, but they can't give you anything official for some time."

So for now in Grand Island, it's the waiting game.

"People are nervous," Marston said.

"From what I've heard, Grand Island has been pretty good so far as far as giving permissions. Some people have asked outright if they would check on their property because they would feel better if they did."
