Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Paul Tolbert, awaiting sentencing for vehicular manslaughter in connection with a 2020 crash, is in more trouble after deputies say he attacked another man being held at the Erie County Holding Center as well as an Erie County Sheriff's Deputy Monday.
Monday morning, deputies say Paul Tolbert attacked another incarcerated individual during prayer services. Deputies say Tolbert approached a fellow incarcerated individual and began yelling at him. As Deputies delivered verbal commands to Tolbert, Deputies say he began punching the victim, continuing even after a deputy tried to pull Tolbert off.
Deputies removed the victim from the area, and Tolbert refused to comply with commands and physically resisted Deputies' attempt to restrain him. Tolbert began punching and kicking the responding Deputies. The individual punched a Deputy in the face and grabbed his throat. The Deputy sustained injuries to his face and throat and was treated at Erie County Medical Center and returned to his post on Tuesday.
Sheriff Detectives are handling the investigation, and Tolbert faces criminal and administrative charges.
He was held after being convicted of killing a passenger when his car crashed into the McKinley Monument on Thanksgiving 2020.
