Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - The weather in Western New York is finally starting to warm up, and many families will soon enough be looking to cool down this summer by visiting their local pools or splash pads.
Mark Campanella, superintendent of Parks and Recreation in the Town of Tonawanda says they're fully ready to provide plenty of warm weather fun for residents.
"We're fortunate we have two outdoor pool venues - Kenmore Pool, which has a wading pool and a full-sized pool, and Lincoln Park Pool, which also has a wading pool and a full-sized pool," said Campanella in an interview with WBEN. "We also have the Town of Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center on Sheridan Drive, that's a year-round facility with an Olympic-sized pool."
Not to mention, the new Paddock Chevrolet Splash Pad is finally up-and-running just across the street from the new Paddock Chevrolet Ice Arena along Brompton Road.
"That's open, it's been open, weather pending, now for the last week or so," Campanella said. "Free for residents, and it goes full charge, weather pending, this coming Tuesday."
One luxury the Town of Tonawanda has this upcoming year for its pools is a full staff of lifeguards.
"We're constantly recruiting and hiring lifeguards year-round, so we're not in this position of, 'Are we going to open or aren't we going to open because of the lack of lifeguards.' We have lifeguards," Campanella said.
"We have the training classes, the Red Cross training classes for lifeguards year-round. And we pay above the standards for our entry-level lifeguards, starts at $17.50 an hour. We're just continuously recruiting lifeguards."
Campanella invites anyone looking for information on any of the Town of Tonawanda swimming pools or the Paddock Chevrolet Spray Park this summer to check out TTYPR.com.
"The outdoor pools are for residents only. And the residents must get a resident access card at the Youth Park and Recreation Office, located at 299 Decatur Road," Campanella noted.
