Buffalo, NY (WBEN) There's a local connection to the Artemis missions, with the goal of reaching the moon. This time, Moog is working with the program, supplying key equipment.
"We've got actuation controls that provide steering for the rocket. We've We've got hardware from tip to tail, and when you look at the contributions for some of the mission, the nine day mission that they just went on, we've got a lot of hardware that goes into the Orion capsule. We've got life support system hardware that's in there, some isolation controls and some propulsion controls as well," says Owczarcak. He says Moog's hardware for the environmental control and life support system provides isolation of high pressure oxygen and distribution of that breathing air to the crew throughout the duration of their mission. "So when this hardware goes up, it launches. It's really exciting to see the launch, but knowing that the hardware we've provided by Moog is critical to their ability to survive the entirety of that mission, from launch to flash down, it's really an incredible contribution to have been able to make to the program," explains Owczarcak.
Moog's relationship will continue with Artemins on upcoming missions. "We've got Artemis III coming up soon, and that'll be sometime next year. That will be a dock in low Earth orbit, and then looking forward to Artemis IV, we've got hardware that is supporting all different parts of the vehicle there that's going to be the next moon landing. So it's really exciting to see where that goes from there,;" says Owczarcak. He says they're working on establishing a permanent presence on the moon, and be it actuation control systems, propulsion control, life support system controls, he says Moog is ready to support whatever the next mission requires.
He says you don't have to be a rocket scientist to work on such a program. "People think of it as this really unattainable thing to be a rocket scientist and work on these incredibly complex and challenging programs, but there are so many different ways folks can find a way to contribute, be it through engineering or quality or operations or assembly and test and machinists all the way into the supply chain. It really takes a wide range of skills and positions to make something like this work and to be as successful as this has been. So I guess I'd say for folks who are out there, and considering career and their future looks the same, there are a lot of ways we can that you can contribute to that," adds Owczarcak.
