Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - National Grid announced Tuesday they will begin installing the controversial new smart meters on Buffalo homes later this month.

The utility company expects to install the meters on over 120,000 homes in the Buffalo area during this part of the rollout. Customers should have received information from National Grid to let them know when their meter is expected to be installed.

“This upgrade to modern meters ensures reliability and introduces advanced technology and tools that provides energy use data,” National Grid Regional Director Ken Kujawa said in a statement. "Customers can use this information to make informed decisions about managing their electricity consumption
and ultimately, control energy costs."

National Grid also said the new meters will instantly notify them when there’s a service interruption.

Over 1 million smart meters have already been installed by national grid across Upstate New York, and the company's Western New York installations are scheduled to be complete in 2027.

The smart meters have come under heavy scrutiny from homeowners across the area who say they have seen their bills skyrocket since installation.
