Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - National Grid is giving a heads up to customers, as the utility has received word people are going door-to-door seeking energy bills.
Spokesperson David Bertola says back in March, there were some Facebook posts around the Amherst-Snyder area that National Grid became aware of. He says the company's social media team put together a tip list for its customers.
"We always wear a photo ID with our logo on it, we always have a hard hat with our logo on it, and we typically try to drive around white trucks that are clearly marked National Grid. What we don't do is go door to door to solicit," Bertola said in an interview with WBEN.
While it’s possible the individual at your door may be a licensed energy services company representative, Bertola says there is a chance it could be someone looking to steal your personal information. He adds there are 150 energy service companies across the state, and some choose to market by going door-to-door.
"They may ask to see your energy bill to see if you're eligible for certain credits to be applied. If you decide to get your electricity or gas delivered by a company, besides National Grid or National Fuel, whether there's confusion, or where there are opportunities to protect yourself," Bertola noted.
If you're not in the moment or feel like you're caught off guard, you can always not answer your door, or politely ask the person to identify him or herself.
"If they can't, ask if there's a leave behind, then you can call that company at your and your own time," Bertola added.
If you've had such an interaction, Bertola advises to call National Grid at 1-800-642-4272 and explain the interaction.
"If you feel like you've given too much personal information, and it might be too late, call the local local police department or dial 9-1-1," he said.
