North Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - Investigators from the North Tonawanda police and fire departments are continuing with their probe into a fatal fire on Oliver Street killed one and left four apartment dwellers seeking temporary shelter.

The cause of the fire, which was reported at 2:48 p.m. on Wednesday at 526 Oliver Street, remains under investigation, as does a final damage estimate.

North Tonawanda Fire Chief Douglas Orlowski says the identity of the male victim won't be released until family members are notified.

"We were able to contain the fire to one apartment, but the other four units did suffer some smoke damage," Orlowski said.

The fire marks the second time this week that a Northern suburban resident has died from fire-related injuries. On Monday, a woman died in a fatal Woodstock Avenue fire in the Town of Tonawanda.

The Oliver Street fire also one of the first examples of how a realignment of North Tonawanda's fire houses and manpower deployment works.

Orlowski has been a champion of the realignment and his proposal was backed by the North Tonawanda City Council in January.

"Our quick reaction is a good example of that," Orlowski said.

The American Red Cross has been called to assist the Oliver Street apartment dwellers who are being temporarily displaced.
