Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - It's a knock at the door that brings connection and hope to seniors.

Amherst Meals on Wheels has been delivering meals for 40 years. The meals are vital, but the social aspect of the program is equally as important.

"We deliver a meal and a smile," said Rick Ellis, Executive Director of the program. He's been with Amherst Meals on Wheels for ten years.

"For seniors who are homebound, it may be the only conversation they have. They may not see anyone else that day."

Amherst Meals on Wheels operates independently, serving the town of Amherst, Eggertsville, Snyder and Williamsville. FeedMore WNY serves the city of Buffalo and most other suburban and rural communities with home delivered meals.

In Amherst, Ellis said they deliver five days a week. If someone needs more, they double up meals on Thursday and Friday.

"We are currently caring for over 350 clients," Ellis explained.

"These are mostly seniors who are homebound and can't cook for themselves, or have a disability, or are coming off of surgery."

All meals are prepared at the Amherst Senior Center, 370 John James Audubon Parkway. Ellis said more than 500 volunteers help out throughout the year.

The program is funded by the Town of Amherst, Erie County Department of Social Services, New York State Department of Aging, as well as private donations.

"We get tremendous response from the community," said Ellis. "We also get funds from family members who pass away. They often leave a legacy, which is very generous."

Are winter months especially challenging for the operation?

"This program is vital every day of the year. It is a little more difficult in the winter because many of our volunteers are seniors and we have to be careful when they're out driving. If the roads aren't plowed or the sidewalks shoveled, or if stairs are covered in ice, it makes it extra challenging. But," he added, "where there's a will, there's a way."

Ellis said he's thrilled to be recognized as "Selfless Among Us."

"I do this out of the love in my heart. I'm continuing a legacy that my father started of volunteering in the community. My son is doing it now downstate. It's a legacy that I love to carry on. I'm proud to be a part of it."
