Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo firefighters rescued several residents of an apartment building at 2439 Delaware Avenue Saturday afternoon as flames broke out and smoke could be seen for miles billowing high from the structure.

At least 15 residents were evaluated on scene by emergency responders and four were transported to ECMC, including one with a broken leg, one pregnant individual, and two with respiratory issues.

Damage is estimated to be $2 million to the building and $500,000 to the contents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The fire displaced 16 units in the apartment complex. Red Cross has been activated to find temporary housing.

Delaware Avenue was closed in both directions from Hertel Avenue to Tacoma Avenue as a result of the firefighting efforts and has since been reopened.

"Nearly 80 of our firefighters responded to the scene, working tirelessly under intense conditions to contain the blaze, rescue residents, and protect everyone in and around the building, Buffalo Mayor Christopher Scanlon said in a statement. "Their swift action led to the successful rescue of several residents, who received immediate care from emergency medical personnel on site."
