BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Despite the region's two largest grocery store chains following state and federal guidance on mask wearing, many shoppers are still choosing to wear a mask.
When WBEN visited one grocery store, most people were still wearing a mask while shopping.
"I think I'm just not quite ready to take that step to remove the mask," one woman said. "I have two children at home who are unvaccinated, so I just wanted to err on the side of caution."
She said she was surprised that most people still chose to wear a mask.
Others we spoke with had a similar reason for why they were wearing a mask. One man said there were many older people there and that he wore a mask because others were already. Another woman said she feels safer wearing a mask.
Everyone we spoke with expects fewer people to wear a mask in the coming days and weeks.
"I think most people want to take the extra precaution and most people are also unaware," one person said. "You'll see the first person start to do it and then there will be a domino effect."
Unvaccinated shoppers are still required to wear a mask, but it's unclear if there will be any enforcement. Target, CVS, Walmart, Trader Joe's, BJ's Wholesale, and Starbucks have all adopted similar policies.
