Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - "We're out here rain or shine."
Since 2016, Calvary Episcopal Church in the Village of Williamsville marks the beginning of Lent by offering "Ashes To Go" from 6 a.m.-to-6 p.m.
"You drive up, stay in your car, and from the car window, we'll give you ashes on your forehead," said Fr. Robert Harvey with WBEN.
Every year, Fr. Harvey says there's one underlying message from residents taking advantage of Ashes To Go.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this. They really appreciate it," he said. "Many say they are unable to attend a full church service or they're working two jobs."
In addition to ashes, people receive a blessing and they're also receiving a wristband that says "I'm practicing the pause."
"In today's culture, there's so much about how you feel in the moment. You hit that angry button on Facebook, or whatever, and let the whole world know how you're feeling," Harvey explained the meaning behind it.
He adds that during Lent's 40-day spiritual journey, he is urging people to not respond quickly and take time to reflect, reset and respond more appropriately.
"Instead of giving something up, take on something new that can benefit you and those around you," Fr. Harvey said.
Calvary is also accepting donations on site for FeedMore WNY.
Last year, over 1,000 people turned out for Ashes To Go in a 12-hour period.
Calvary Episcopal is located at 20 Milton Street at South Cayuga Road in Williamsville.
Fr. Harvey says anyone and everyone is welcome.
