DARIEN, N.Y. (WBEN) A fixture for years at Six Flags Darien Lake is no more.

The Giant Wheel, a signature ride at the Genesee County amusement park since 1983, is being dismantled.

A statement from the park says the ferris wheel has reached the end of its useful life and is no longer a good fit.

The Giant Wheel was built by a Dutch manufacturer for the 1982 World's Fair
in Knoxville, Tennessee. At the time, it was the largest ferris wheel in the world at a height of 165 feet.

The ride was retired last year.

There's no word from Six flags Darien Lake on what might replace the wheel in the future.

The theme park is busy constructing a new attraction. The Wahoo Wave should be completed by the time the theme park opens for the upcoming season. Six Flags Darien Lake is scheduled to open for the 2022 season over Memorial Day weekend.
