Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - If you registered for a concealed carry permit in New York State, time may be running out to renew. A change in the law in 2022 reduced the amount of time your permit is good for.
Niagara County Clerk Joe Jasztremski says state lawmakers reduced the length of a permit from five years to three years in 2022. So if you received the permit in 2022, you're likely up for renewal.
Jasztremski says you can't go to a County Clerk's Office to do the renewal, instead you have to go online.
"There's a website that you go to and you click on recertification. You have to have a government ID number," said Jasztremski with WBEN.
There is one requirement that's become less stringent in New York.
"If you are a Florida resident and you have a Florida driver's license, you can put in that ID number. It no longer has to be a New York State driver's license ID number, but you have to have your ID number from one of these driver's licenses," Jasztremski explained. "You put that in your name will come up, and then what you do is you can check and see when the last time was you recertified, or if you are up for recertification."
If you don't renew your permit in time, Jasztremski says it could be revoked.
"State Police don't actively go out there and do that time, but this is going back several years ago, and we've had a change in leadership at the New York State Police Department," he said. "My recommendation is go on there, check see if you're up for recertification. If you're not, it only takes a second to try and do it if you have not recertified, even if you're not in compliance."
A premises permit still lasts five years.
