Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - It was a bright and heartwarming moment in an otherwise depressing "Monday Night Football" appearance for the Buffalo Bills, as a creative Visa commercial detailed a Bills fan's life journey.
The commercial, one local ad agency's chief creative officer tells WBEN, tugged at the emotions of Bills fans near and far.
Matthew Low of Crowley Webb says ad creators were definitely tapping into the psyche of long suffering fans here in Western New York, but also their love affair with the Bills.
"To follow somebody's story and to see how much a part of life the Bills mean to each and every Western New Yorker here was something that really resonated with me for sure," said Low.
Low says the first bit of nostalgia that caught him was the old Visa card used at the start of the spot.
"I was just sort of obsessed with the old looking Visa card and realized, 'Oh, that's not a throwback. It's actually doing a bit of nostalgia and going backwards,'" he said. "Then to see again how they walk through the life of the the central character and really were spot on."
Low believes the ad agency worked with the Bills closely to know what it's like to be a Bills fan, and just how entrenched the community is with this team.
Another thing that impressed him was the choice of player jerseys in the ad, including Joe DeLamielleure, Scott Norwood, and Doug Flutie.
"It was something that stood out, because only true Bills fans would pick those out," Low said, adding seeing Norwood's jersey was heart-wrenching, reminding him of his missed kick in Super Bowl XXV.
Low adds to see Buffalo thrown back in the mix with other teams who are doing well, and to be part of the conversation to the point of being part of a national advertising definitely brings a sense of pride.
