A hiker on the Pacific Crest Trail near Lake Tahoe had to be airlifted to safety over the weekend after becoming severely dehydrated while on the trail.

The hiker’s identity has not been released, but the California Highway Patrol shared that the rescue occurred while they were hiking near Basin Peak.

The patrol’s Valley Division Air Operations assisted Truckee Fire, who was also on the scene providing medical attention to the hiker.

A helicopter was used to get emergency crews to the hiker, according to a Facebook Post from the California Highway Patrol. They shared that a landing zone was located near the patient, allowing them to make contact.

From the trail, they were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to the post. Their condition is currently unknown.

The California Highway Patrol shared in its post that carrying extra water is extremely important with high temperatures.

“Factors such as elevation gain, trail exposure to the sun and physical ability can drastically increase the need for more water,” the post said. “Plan ahead and take more water than you think you will need.”
