Citing a “night and day” difference, the Internal Revenue Service is becoming far more efficient, according to at least one analyst.
The agency announced that it has decreased its backlog of taxes significantly, dropping the number from 13.3 million at the end of the 2022 filing season to just 2.6 million this year.
That’s an 80% decline in backlogged cases.
“Overall, the difference between the 2022 filing season and the 2023 filing season was like night and day,” the Taxpayer Advocate Service's Erin M. Collins said in a news release. “It marks a return to pre-pandemic levels.”
And the agency’s improvements aren’t limited to catching up on old cases. More current taxpayers in need of assistance are getting the help they need as well, according to the I.R.S. report.
In 2022, only 11% of incoming calls were picked up. That number is now up to 35% in 2023.
