Recent shootings in Minnesota and Utah - including last week's assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk - has, once again, put a focus on the dual issues of safety and security on all educational campuses.
It is not a new topic, nor one that should be taken lightly or overlooked, says school security expert Bill Naab, co-founder of Buffalo-based Ink Labs.
"People are concerned and they should be," Naab said.
There are some basic security measures such as screening of people and their backpacks as they enter a building. And, there are more sophisticated methods too including using advanced technology.
But, Naab, said it also comes down to a more basic premise.
People watching people," Naab said. "If you see something, report it."
Law enforcement agencies do not have a problem with over reporting, Naab said.
"Police love nothing better than the call back saying something was just a false alarm." Naab said.
So in light of the Kirk assassination, Naab said he does expect even more emphasis on safety and security issues.
"There's nothing wrong with being over cautious," Naab says.
