A foggy start Tuesday, with dense fog along the Lake Erie and Niagara shoreline expected to spread inland, before dissipating midday across the Buffalo-Niagara region.

National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Thomas tells WBEN the inland fog should pullback by the midday hours. "Right along the shoreline, I wouldn't be surprised if the fog remains right through the daytime today."

A Dense Fog Advisory is posted through early Wednesday for the Buffalo metro and Erie County.

As the gradual warmup and meltdown continues across the Western New York region, a midweek active weather pattern will arrive Wednesday, forst in the form of rain.

"We are watching an area of rain that will be arrive(early morning) tomorrow(Wednesday)," Thomas notes. "Especially for the southern areas it will remain plain rain, but for Niagara County, Orleans County, it might start off as a bit of freezing rain before changing over to plain rain."

Only a short period of freezing precipitation is in the forecast, however Thomas cautions, "There could be a tenth or two of ice accumulating on tree branches or other elevated surfaces."

The freezing rain threat will mainly be north of the Buffalo metro area Wednesday.

Ice Jam Threat

With the gradual warmup and the added rainfall that is forecast for the region, the threat of ice jam flooding is somewhat of a concern.

"The combination of the widespread rain across the area and these warmer temperatures...we're expecting rainfall amounts of half an inch to an inch...that is certainly going to break up and start to shift the ice on the area creeks and streams," NWS meteorologist Phillip Pandolfo cautions.

Of course it is still winter in Western New York, and we can still expect more cold weather to come.

"The long range models do indicate another seasonably cold stretch is going to arrive, sometime over the weekend, with chances for snow across much of the area."
