Air quality improvement across Buffalo and WNY

"As we go through the day, the smoke, the concentration will continue to drop off."

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Compared to what we saw, smelled and even 'tasted' in the air over the Buffalo-Niagara region earlier this week, air quality across the region is much improved.

"In terms of smoke, there's not that much out there now," National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Hamilton tells WBEN early Friday. "If we weren't talking about it, most people probably wouldn't know there's smoke overhead."

Hamilton tells us the bulk of the smoke our region will deal with will be early in the day and it's moving southward into Pennsylvania.

"As we go through the day, the smoke, the concentration will continue to drop off," he says.

An Air Quality Alert remains in place for the Western New York region.

"The level of the fine particulates that they issued the Air Quality Alert is just barely above the level where they would issue that alert," Hamilton tells us. "It's nothing like we saw a few days ago and conditions continue to improve."

CHECK: Current Air Quality

Some scattered showers will also help to dissipate any remaining smoke concerns and a more organized area of significant rain is forecast for the WNY region late Sunday into Monday.
