We'll miss a storm, but 'plenty of winter this week' as winter 'pause' is over

"It's too early to get spoiled just yet"

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The "pause" on winter in Buffalo and Western New York is over as colder air has returned and the threat of some accumulating snow is again in the forecast.

If you're an avid winter sports enthusiast there appears to be some hope for the latter half of February, NWS forecasters say. On the other hand, if you’re itching for an early start to spring, you may want to hold off on putting that warmer winter gear away for now.

"We're finally getting back to normal winter weather here for mid-February," National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Hamilton tells WBEN.

A storm system will pass to the south of the region late Monday and will not be an impact to our weather. It will be later in the week when wintry conditions return in more seasonable fashion.

Some lake effect snow showers are expected later Tuesday into Wednesday, Hamilton tells us. An inch or two of accumulation is possible, mainly across the southern tier and toward Rochester as well.

Another storm system will race through the region on Thursday, Hamilton tells WBEN. "That one has a better chance of producing some widespread accumulating snow," he says. "Plenty of winter this week," he adds.

If you're looking for comforting words that winter is nearing an end in Western New York, Hamilton has a stark reminder that snow is a possibility right into May, based on historical weather patterns. "We got a couple months that we could conceivably see the white stuff," he says.
