Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued an Air Quality Alert Health Advisory for all of Western New York, in effect until 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
Canadian wildfire smoke continues to move across the country, including into Western New York, and is significantly affecting local air quality Wednesday.
Air quality levels are expected to exceed an Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 101 for ground-level ozone. The AQI measures pollution levels in the air.
The New York State Department of Health recommends limiting time outdoors, especially strenuous activities, to reduce potential health risks. Young people and those with respiratory conditions such as asthma or heart disease should consider consulting a physician before engaging in outdoor activities.
