The heat and humidity will hang on through the day Sunday across the Buffalo-Niagara region, but change will be in the forecast as the weekend winds down.

A cold front will approach the area Sunday and, in the process, will generate widespread showers and thunderstorms, some of which could produce strong gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall.

The combination of humidity and warm temperatures may result in heat indices in the upper 90's again Sunday, however the heat will be less prevalent with more cloud cover and the likelihood of rain showers, National Weather Service forecasters say.

Flood watches have bee posted for areas to the east, not impacting the immediate Buffalo or WNY region.

Warm weather will continue for the region Monday, however dewpoints will be lower and the chance of showers remains in the forecast.

Drier weather is forecast for Monday night through Tuesday night, with the potential for another round of heat beginning midweek.
