Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - After nearly a season's worth of snow in two storms, the Buffalo weather roller coaster ride continues as lake effect snow is fading away and will be replaced by a major warm-up from the frigid cold that has gripped the region.

Only in Buffalo, it seems, can you go from rain on Friday to 50 plus inches of snow and life-threatening cold, and then back to temperatures above freezing along with significant melt-off and rain in the forecast.

"By late this afternoon, the band finally, finally from the system, should be out of here and we will be all done with this storm," said National Weather Service meteorologist Kirk Apfel on WBEN Tuesday morning. "The storm total here at the airport is running just a hair over 50 inches," added Apfel as he tacked-on the 7 or so inches that fell across parts of the area Monday.

Temperatures will jump above freezing beginning Wednesday and be increasingly warmer each day into the coming New Year's weekend, Apfel says. "We're going to have highs looking like the lower 50's Friday all the way through New Year's Day."

Apfel predicts a gradual melt-off and says a good portion of the snow pack will be gone by next week.

Forecasters will watch for possible flooding that may result from the warm-up, melt-off and some rain in the forecast this weekend.
